Abstract

This research aims to analyze the foreign policy of the United States towards China in the era of Donald Trump in the case of increasing tax rates on products from China. To help analyze problems in research, the authors use Neo-Mercantilism Theory and Foreign Policy Theory (Internal-External Setting). The research method used in this study is a qualitative research method with explanatory research. The findings in this study indicate that the increase in tax rates for products from China is a form of economic protectionism policy implemented by the United States government in the era of Donald Trump as an effort to protect its domestic product industry. There were several factors that prompted Donald Trump to issue this policy, including internal factors referring to the declining economic growth conditions in the United States, the United States' trade deficit against China, and Donald Trump's experience as a businessman. In addition, there are also social structures and behaviors that influence it, namely Donald Trump who comes from the Republican Party and the United States' desire to change China's economic policy. Then external factors, referring to the high value of Chinese exports to the United States, China's increasing influence and dominance at the global level, and the theft of American intellectual property rights (IPR) by Chinese companies.
